Our department was established in 2012 within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and started to accept students in the 2014-2015 academic year. Between 2014-2015 academic year and 2019-2020 academic year, our department was managed by our founding chairman Professor Bülent BAYRAM.

Our department head was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdülkadir ATICI from the 2019-2020 Academic Year to the 2021-2022 Academic Year; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlker TOSUN in the Fall Semester of the 2021-2022 Academic Year. As of December of the 2021-2022 Academic Year, Prof. Dr. Emin EMİNOĞLU was appointed as the department head, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlker TOSUN was reassigned as the department head in October 2023. Prof. Dr. Bülent BAYRAM returned to his post as department head in May 2024. The Department of Contemporary Turkish Dialects and Literatures consists of a total of 9 academic staff, including 3 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, and 2 Research Assistants.

The department provides interdisciplinary education on the Turkic dialects, literatures, history, socio-cultural structures, and international relations of the Turkic world, which is spread out overvastregions, including, most importantly, Central Asia.

Our students graduate after completing an undergraduate thesis under the supervision of a thesis advisor and on a research topic in the field of their choice, thereby earning the title “Turcologist.”

A wide array of professional fields awaits our graduates. In addition to enjoying the rich business opportunities in the private sector dealing with the Turkic republics, our graduates can work as area experts in related organizations and establishments, as well as research institutions. Upon fulfilling relevant pedagogic requirements, our graduates can also become teachers of Turkish language and literature in national educational institutions at middle and high school levels.

Our department's thesis master's degree was opened in 2015 and it started to accept students in the 2016-2017 academic year.

Our department's Master Degree Program was opened in 2015 and has accepted students in the 2016-2017 Academic Year; and the Ph.D. Program has accepted students since the Fall Semester of the 2024-2025 Academic Year.
